Reckless Abandon

reckless abandon

I love the story of Ruth. If she were here today, I would definitely want her as a close friend. It’s a pretty safe bet I’d be all up on her doorstep with some Cookiedoodle Cookies. Seriously..the best cookies in the Tulsa area.

Sorry for that Shannon-ism. On to my story. One of my favorite scriptures of the Bible is found in the book named after Ruth.  In fact, they are her own words:

But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.   Ruth 1:16

Ruth showed such dedication to her mother in law when she said this. I wonder why? What was it about Naomi that she loved so much? Or maybe she just didn’t want to go back home… but, if that is the reason, then why?

Hhmmm…maybe, ..just maybe it didn’t have anything to do with either? She says, “Your God will be my God.”

Naomi knew God in a way that Ruth only longed for. She loved the God inside Naomi.  That’s what it was. She longed for more. She knew there was a better life for her. She had FAITH and BELIEVED. She was reckless. Carefree. Rash. She gave up. She gave up everything with reckless abandon in order to find God.

That reckless abandon landed her a spot right in the very genealogy of Jesus Christ and she was richly rewarded!

Who is the Naomi in your life? Who is the Ruth? I am blessed to have both. I know I will be held accountable for both in heaven and let me tell you I do not take it lightly. The Naomi and Ruth in my life have taught me so much. I said both of them..even the Ruth.  So who are your’s? Who is your example, and who are you being the example for? Think about it. If you don’t have one or both, start looking for them. Look for them RIGHT NOW. Seriously. Go. Ask God to show you who they are!

In looking at the life of Ruth, are you willing to give up everything for Jesus Christ and trust him COMPLETELY so that you can REALLY start living the life He has planned for you? God HAS SO MUCH planned for you. Do you not know this my dear friend?? Do you not know?? I wish I could just shake you! Get up!

So JUST DO IT. Give up. Follow him with reckless abandon. Have FAITH and BELIEVE! If you don’t know who in the world this Jesus Christ is, message me (shannongeurin1 at and I will show you how to find him. If you do know him but you’re not following him the way you KNOW you should then GIRL it’s time to give it up and JUST DO IT.

Find the Ruth in your life. (Who can you mentor or be an example for?)

Find the Naomi in your life. (Who is your mentor?- EVERYONE needs one no matter how old you are!)

Are you ready to start living the life God has for you? If not, why? What is the hindrance? (Don’t make me shake you BECAUSE I WILL.)

As always, I love you! Each and every one of ya!

I love your thoughts on this! I think we focus on Ruth’s devotion to Naomi and fail to focus on the fact that it is God whom she is really longing to follow and it is sad because, out of context, we lose the example of how Godly relationships should be focused on Him. I love how you implemented these roles in your life too! Thanks for sharing!

I really appreciate this post, Shannon. I was blessed enough to meet a few Naomis but don’t know if I ever had a chance to be one for anyone. This is one of the things we talked about in one of our retreats, how important it is for disciples of Christ to invest time in someone so they can grow in Christ. Hope you’re having a good week! ~Cynthia
